As your Labour candidate to be the next MP for Erewash, I’m committed to ensuring that our local communities have access to reliable and affordable transportation options. That’s why I’m proud to support Labour’s bold plan to fully nationalise the train network within five years of coming to power.
Under Labour, passenger rail services will be brought into national ownership under Great British Railways, as contracts with private operators expire. This comprehensive plan, endorsed by the architect of the Conservatives’ own rail strategy, marks the biggest reform of our railways in a generation.
What does this mean for the residents of Erewash? It means guaranteed cheaper fares, improved service standards, and a renewed focus on putting passengers first. Our commitment to cutting waste and reclaiming shareholder dividends will save an estimated £2.2 billion, ensuring that every pound spent on rail goes towards improving the system, not lining the pockets of private companies. And with our vow to put Derby at the heart of our plan by headquartering Great British Railways in the city, it’ll mean new jobs for local people on our doorstep.
In Labour, we recognise the importance of our railways to the productivity and well-being of our communities. By taking decisive action to reform our rail network, we will not only save money but also improve the quality of service for passengers in Erewash and across the country – our focus is on delivering real improvements for passengers while ensuring value for money for taxpayers.
In addition to nationalisation, Labour will establish a Passenger Standards Authority to oversee the new system, ensuring accountability and transparency. Passengers will benefit from best-price ticket guarantees, automatic delay repay, and the convenience of digital season tickets across the network, making travel simpler and more accessible for all.
I firmly believe that nationalising the railways is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. By investing in our public transportation infrastructure, we can create a more efficient, sustainable, and equitable system that works for everyone.
