Derbyshire Labour election pledges

We have just launched our campaign for the Derbyshire County Council election 2021. Here are our Labour pledges to you.

When elected, a Labour-led Derbyshire County Council will:

Rebuild our local economy
Over the last 4 years, the Tories have spent millions on vanity projects, like resorting a conservatory at county hall and revamping Elvaston castle. The have left local jobs unfilled, spending over £13m on agency staff and over £7m on consultants.

In government, Labour will use Derbyshire assets to attract inward investment and fill vacancies by providing jobs for local people. We will also ensure council tax payers’ money is spent on services, not consultants, and end the outsourcing of jobs to external agencies and private companies.

Invest in our young people
Over the last 4 years, the Tories have failed to take up funding for new apprenticeships and have shut down place-based youth services.

In government, Labour will increase apprenticeship place and job opportunities, and will invest in young people by delivering projects to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Improve care for our elderly
Over the last 4 years, the Tories have threatened closure of care homes when needed most, and force people with long-term care needs into private care provision. They have also reduced long-term residential care places in County-operated care homes.

In government, Labour will invest in our care homes, and protect services and jobs. We will deliver care for Derbyshire people using Derbyshire care staff and restore allocation of long-term places in County operated care homes.

Take real climate action
Over the last 4 years, the Tories have refused to commit to meaningful climate change action. They have failed to get Government support for flood damage and local infrastructure, and have been slow to divest pension investments.

In government, Labour will deliver more climate change programmes and promote Derbyshire as a national hub for green investment and jobs. Labour will hold Government to account for local residents and will continue to promote pension fund investment into green initiatives.

*Deliver better, safer roads
Over the last 4 years, the Tories have failed to deliver on long-needed capital programmes and have failed to support local communities on road safety projects. The Tories have ignored sustainable transport needs and failed to meet repair targets.

In government, Labour will refocus and reprioritise road, footpath and cycleway projects, and introduce a “first time fix” policy for repairs. We will listen to local communities to address road safety issues and improve sustainable transport infrastructure to make local transport safer, clearer and greener
